We carry out systematic work to ensure and develop the quality of our programmes. Education is evaluated within the framework of a shared quality assurance system in six-year cycles, with a focus on quality, relevance and attractiveness.

Quality assurance work covers first-cycle (undergraduate), second-cycle (Master’s) and third-cycle (doctoral) education. It is based on clear procedures and peer review that support long-term development. The work is governed by two formally adopted procedures at Linköping University.

  • Rutiner för kvalitetssäkring och kvalitetsutveckling av utbildning på grundnivå och avancerad nivå (Procedures for quality assurance and enhancement of first- and second-cycle education) (ref. no. LiU-2025-04116)
  • Rutiner för kvalitetssäkring och kvalitetsutveckling av utbildning på forskarnivå (Procedures for quality assurance and enhancement of third-cycle education) (ref. no. LiU-2025-04115)

The procedures describe continuous follow-up and periodic reviews in more detail. They can be downloaded from the document library: Decisions on quality assurance.

Impact of our work

Quality assurance leads to improvements. Some examples:

Increased study completion rates

  • Early interventions to reduce student drop-out
  • Programme and course reviews to avoid uneven workload distribution
  • Support to help more students complete their final credits and graduate

Strengthened student engagement

  • Projects with the student unions: The student engagement ceremony, Academic citizenship and Strengthened student engagement
  • Scheduled time for course evaluation responses, including time during lectures, course-specific questions and feedback to students
  • Regular student and doctoral surveys, as well as alumni follow-up

Improvement of doctoral education environments

  • Initiative for graduate schools for smaller environments
  • Collaboration agreements with other higher education institutions
  • Collaboration on joint supervision arrangements within and beyond LiU

Quality assurance system

Process for quality work

Continuous follow-up

We conduct regular operational dialogues between faculties and departments. The purpose is to ensure the basic conditions for high-quality education and to monitor implementation and outcomes.

Periodic review of courses and programmes

All courses and programmes are reviewed at least once within a six-year period. The review process consists of:

  • Quality report from the course or programme
  • Peer review
  • Quality dialogue
  • Assessment
  • Action plan

The quality report follows established headings and is based on key areas that together provide an overall picture of the course or programme quality. The report and reviewers’ comments form the basis for a quality dialogue involving faculty management and the person responsible for the report. Students are always invited and play an important role.
The dialogue results in an assessment and an action plan. Templates for quality reports and reviews are available for download in the document library.

Peer review

The quality reports are assessed by peer reviewers to ensure objectivity. Reviewers should normally be based in a different educational environment within LiU, but may also come from another higher education institution. This approach strengthens quality through an external perspective and promotes learning between different parts of the university.

Annual faculty-level summary

Each year, the faculties and the Faculty of Educational Sciences produce two types of faculty analyses:

  • one for undergraduate and Master’s education
  • one for doctoral education

The analyses serve as a basis for a joint dialogue in the Quality Assurance Board, where students and doctoral student representatives participate. Discussions focus on the year’s quality work, highlighting strengths, weaknesses and examples of good practices. They also summarise work that has taken place during the past year based on approved action plans for courses and programmes from previous reviews.

Annual university-level summary

The faculty analyses form the basis of an annual report providing an overall view of the year’s quality work at LiU. The report is approved by the vice-chancellor and used in the work of the Quality Assurance Board for the coming year, as well as in LiU’s operational planning.

Educational development occurs at multiple levels

  • Course and programme level: Course and programme coordinators work closely with education delivery, for example by developing measures with students to increase response rates to course evaluations.
  • Faculty level: Faculties may initiate broader measures, such as initiatives to improve completion rates.
  • LiU-wide level: For example, developing tools for systematic analysis of student flows and other operational data.
