Outdoor Learning in Theory and Practice, 15 credits

Autumn 2026, Full-time, Linköping

Interested in taking your teaching beyond the classroom walls?
This course is built on the Scandinavian tradition of uteskola – “outdoor school” – where the syllabus is regularly taught outdoors in close connection with indoor learning.

You will broaden your professional expertise as a teacher by learning how to use a variety of outdoor environments for teaching and learning. The course combines both theoretical perspectives and hands-on practice, and explores how different school subjects can be taught outside – in both natural and urban settings.

Outdoor learning for all ages
We explore a wide range of outdoor learning environments, including cities, nature reserves, school grounds and playgrounds. Examples are drawn from across the educational system, from pre-school to secondary school. You will also have opportunities to focus on your own areas of interest and teaching practice.

Theory meets practice – in the field
Throughout the course, we examine the theoretical and practical traditions that have shaped the field of outdoor education, with a strong focus on the Scandinavian concept of uteskola. The emphasis is on active participation, outdoor experiences, and reflective practice – both oral and written.

Much of the course takes place in the field, where different outdoor settings serve as real-world arenas for teaching and learning. You’ll gain valuable experience in planning and leading outdoor lessons, building the confidence to make outdoor education a natural and effective part of your teaching toolkit.
