My research focus on how perceptions of the social world affect well-being and on developing interventions when this perception causes problems. I study this using both clinical trials and experimental paradigms.

The social world and mental health

The social world and how it is perceived is of great importance for understanding many mental health problems.

My research focuses on understanding the role of the social world in mental health. My primary research interest is in understanding the phenomenon of loneliness and why it becomes a lasting problem for some people. For my Ph.D. I investigated whether internet-based psychological treatments can be of help for this group. The SOLUS intervention that we have developed has now been used successfully in different iterations both in Sweden and abroad.

Additionally, I have recently served as the lead in an experimental study studying how morphine affects social cognition. Understanding the neurobiological basis and mechanisms of such processes can hopefully help gain a broader understanding of how perceptions of the social world ties into mental health in general and substance use disorders in particular.

I am currently also involved in two studies on psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy. The first of these (led by Dr. Rebecca Böhme) targets complicated grief, while the second (led by Dr. Leah Mayo) focuses on treating social anxiety in people who have not been helped by other treatment options.
Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has received a lot of attention in recent years, with studies showing significant symptom reduction for a range of conditions, but there are many questions surrounding the results and for whom this type of treatment would be an option.

Research

Current projects

I am involved in a number of ongoing research projects:

  • PSILOSAD (PI: Dr. Leah Mayo), which investigates whether psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy can be helpful for people suffering from social anxiety disorder when other treatments have not been effective.
  • MOR-STRESS-SI (PI: Professor Markus Heilig), which investigates how opioids affect people's social cognition. The study aims to investigate whether the use of opioids can serve a social function in people with substance use disorder.
  • ISAC (PI: Professor Gerhard Andersson), which investigates whether an internet-based support program based on CBT can be helpful for men affected by prostate cancer who suffer from psychological problems related to the cancer.
  • PGD-Psi (PI: Rebecca Böhme), which investigates the possibility of treating prolonged grief with psilocybin.

In addition to these, I have also been involved in several other projects, mainly related to internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy.

The Heilig Translational Psychiatry Lab: Clinical group

We use brain imaging, behavior analysis and pharmacology to study how a breakdown of coping with stress and regulating negative emotions results in disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress and addiction.

Teaching

I have over 2,300 teaching hours at a undergraduate and graduate level, mainly related to the clinical psychology programme and the psychotherapist training programme.
