The conversation with the farmer
To ensure that energy initiatives are in line with climate targets, careful consideration is needed regarding where these initiatives should be focused. This also necessitates dialogue with the relevant stakeholders. Our latest research project has involved discussions with farmers in Östergötland. Among other things, these discussions indicate that on-farm energy production creates stability for individual farms when energy prices fluctuate. However, this requires long-term
foundational conditions, both politically and structurally.
For example, it is important that farmers have a good understanding of both regulations and support schemes in order to contribute renewable energy to society. The support does not necessarily have to be financial. Skills development and direct access to authorities appear to be almost as important.

Biogas and our future food system
There is a link between food, consumption and the energy system. A sustainable future requires us to use our resources wisely. If we change our consumption patterns, this can in turn affect conditions in other parts of the value chain.Biogas production relies on substrates derived from organic waste, including waste from households and food production. In our ongoing research, we are studying the interaction between the food system and the energy system, with a particular focus on biogas.
