The Library supports LiU researchers in issues relating to data management. For example, we offer advice regarding how to make research data openly accessible or with limited access, selecting a repository, and by providing a tool to create data management plans.

Openly accessible research data is one of the aspects of open science. Scholarly journals can nowadays also require researchers to make the research data openly accessible when publishing their results.

On this page, you can read about different ways to make research data accessible, about data management plans and a tool to help create such plans.

Openly accessible research data

Researchers can choose to make their research data openly accessible by publishing them in a repository. An advantage of doing this is that it allows the data to be cited in a similar manner as research results when they are published. In some cases, research funders and journals can require supporting data to be made openly accessible.

Research data with limited access

For legal reasons, not all research data can med made openly accessible, for example if they include personal data, sensitive or confidential information, or material protected by copyright. In these cases, an alternative can be to make the data accessible with limited access. To get access to such data, a request must be submitted to the responsible authority (for example, Linköping University), which will then review the request to determine if the data can be handed out with transferred confidentiality.

Please also note that research data produced at universities and research institutions in Sweden in most cases are considered to be public records and will be handed out should someone request it and if no reasons of confidentiality exist.

Data management plans

What is a data management plan?

A data management plan is a formalized document that outlines what will happen with the research data during a research project and after the project has been completed. The content of the data management plan is dependent on field of research, type of research data used, and the current phase of the project.

A data management plan can be created for several different reasons. One important reason can be to comply with a research funder requirement to do so. By creating and actively using a data management plan, it is easy to get an overview of one’s research data and associated legal requirements.

Data Management Plan (DMP) Create

Linköping University Library provides a tool, LiU DMP Create, for LiU researchers to help set up data management plans. The tool collects information for a data management plan that the principal investigator can register and by so doing fulfill research funders’ requirements. With LiU DMP Create, it is also possible to generate a plan with a format in accordance with the six parts suggested by the Swedish Research Council.

LiU DMP Create is available to researchers affiliated with Linköping University with a current LiU-ID.

Contact and more information

Zenodo

LiU researchers can use Linköping University's Community at Zenodo to publish their research data. Zenodo is a general repository where researchers can make their research data openly accessible.

When data contain personal or sensitive information only descriptive information about the data is placed in Zenodo with instructions on contacting the university for those interested in exploring whether they can gain access to the data files. For research data containing personal data or sensitive information, LiU researchers can use LiU Secure Repository.

Research data produced at Linköping University and other universities in Sweden in most cases are considered to be public records and will be handed out should someone request it and if no reasons of confidentiality exist.
