A small pilot study in which researchers attempted to slow attacks mounted by the immune system on insulin-producing cells in type 1 diabetes has given promising results.

Not all of the children who run an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes actually develop the disease. Why is this? Researchers at LiU study the immune defence in detail, attempting to find out more about the mechanisms behind the disease.

A clinical study has investigated whether immunotherapy against type 1 diabetes can preserve the body’s own production of insulin. The results suggest that injection of a protein, GAD, into lymph nodes can be effective in a subgroup of individuals.
