Clear strategies and political stability on energy issues after the oil crisis of the 1970s lies behind Denmark´s progress in biogas and biomethane. Key note speaker at BSRC Winter Conference 2025 was Torben Brabo, former CEO Energinet in Denmark.

Landowner Rudolf Tornerhjelm鈥檚 success in biogas and plant nutrition is built on long term thinking and extensive collaboration between different actors. They have invested in the development of several smart solutions.

With around 500 cows, his own biogas plant and electricity production, farmer Lars Paulsson has taken major steps towards becoming self sufficient in energy.

Several research projects in the Nordic countries show that it is possible to extract plant proteins from, for example, ley grass, and subsequently produce biogas. One of these projects is underway at SLU in Alnarp.

The biogas plant in Jordberga, just outside Trelleborg, accounts for a significant share of the region鈥檚 biogas production. The facility, which is now owned by Gasum, produces between 110 and 115 GWh of upgraded biogas annually.

Policymakers may find it difficult to understand and be able to weigh in all sustainability effects of biogas systems. A new report highlights 53 different effects, most of which have a positive impact on society.

A wide-ranging report from IEA Bioenergy has highlighted different perspectives on how biogas can be used in the transport sector.  The report shows that well-designed biogas solutions are technically, economically and sustainably competitive.
