I research the microcirculation, the smallest blood vessels in the body. I develop new methods for imaging the microvascular function, specifically by using image processing and machine learning implemented in programmable logic hardware (FPGA).

Optical imaging of the microvascular function

There are many methods for imaging different aspects of the microcirculation. My focus is on two such methods, MELSCI (multi-exposure laser speckle contrast imaging) for blood flow and MSI (multi-spectral imaging) for oxygen saturation, and how these techniques can be combined to get a more comprehensive view of the microvascular function.

By using model-based analysis of the image data, machine learning methods, as well as implementations in programmable logic hardware, my goal is to make these methods faster, more efficient, and more robust. Through close collaboration with both industry and healthcare, I aim to enable the clinical implementation of these techniques, where they in the future can benefit patients with, for example, diabetes, sepsis, non-healing wounds, and chronic ischemia.
