A Centre for advanced kidney research

Patient-oriented nephrology research is conducted to develop new and more effective treatments. The centre serves as a hub for clinicians and biomedical researchers to strengthen kidney research.

From Discovery to Clinical Application

At the centre, both experimental and clinical research is conducted, ranging from studies of immune cells and biomarkers to dialysis research, registry-based studies, and clinical drug trials. Through collaboration and strategic initiatives, the centre creates conditions for long-term advancement in kidney medicine.

A growing need for kidney research

Chronic kidney disease is a growing global public health challenge, affecting approximately ten per cent of the world’s population. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), kidney disease is projected to become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide by 2040 if no action is taken.

There is a strong need for increased research into disease mechanisms and strategies to prevent disease progression. One of the key goals of kidney research at LiU is to enable earlier diagnosis and treatment. Timely and more precise interventions can slow progression to kidney failure and reduce the risk of associated complications.

Ingrid Asp Foundation

The Ingrid Asp Center for Kidney Disease Research was established in the autumn of 2023 to strengthen research into the mechanisms of kidney diseases and contribute to the development of new treatments.

The center’s activities have been made possible thanks to generous support from the Ingrid Asp Foundation for Kidney Disease Research, a significant contribution to a severely underfunded field of research.

New competencies

  • Andreas Kronbichler, visiting professor from the University of Innsbruck, conducting research on inflammatory kidney diseases and vasculitis.
  • Christopher Sjöwall, professor at Linköping University (LiU), researching systemic lupus erythematosus, where kidney involvement is common.
  • Vanja Ivković, nephrologist and postdoctoral researcher with strong expertise in statistics and bioinformatics.
  • Jhonatan Alvarez, international postdoctoral researcher studying immune regulation in SLE within the centre.

Seminar Series

A platform for researchers to meet

To disseminate our research, we have established a regular seminar series where researchers from Linköping University (LiU) and Region Östergötland (RÖ) present ongoing projects and results. We also invite guest speakers from both within and outside the center to broaden perspectives and deepen discussions. Great emphasis is placed on the conversations that follow the presentations.

The seminars are held regularly, either in person at LiU or RÖ, or digitally to enable wider participation.
