We aim towards being the world leading group in the unravelling of systems-level mechanistic insights, using inter-connected M4 models for decision support in pharma and P4 medicine – thereby making a positive change in society.

Optical techniques as laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and fluorescence systems, and their related measurement probes, are adapted and translate for use during the neurosurgery.

By combining mathematical models, prior knowledge, and experimental data, we unravel biological mechanisms and contribute to the development of new drugs and clinical tools.

In this project, OCT’s potentials for intra-operative and postoperative (laboratory) pathology diagnostics are investigated.

We develop methods & techniques for depicting anatomy & function in the human body & its organs. From imaging techniques, through methods of analysis and quantification of image information, to validation of new methods and image-based biomarkers.

Biomedical Optics studies the basic principles of interaction between light and biological tissues, cells and molecules and develops new technologies for use in basic research and clinical applications.

Artificial intelligence can be used to provide a more precise time of death, which can be crucial in e.g. murder investigations. The AI model is trained on so-called metabolites in thousands of blood samples from real deaths.

The Promobilia Foundation has donated SEK 30 million to LiU for a research project where organic electronics will be used to treat Parkinson’s disease symptoms. Stiftelsen för Parkinsonsforskning at LiU has also donated SEK 5 million to the purpose.

The BME@LiU conference brought together 250 participants from academia, healthcare and industry to explore current research and innovation in biomedical engineering.
