I am a Swedish ethicist and emeritus professor of applied ethics at Linköping University. My academic work focuses on global justice and the ethical implications of globalization, medical ethics, work ethics, and ethical issues related to information and communication technologies (ICT ethics).
From 2011 to 2015, I was President of Societas Ethica, the European Society for Research in Ethics. Presently, I am member of the board of the Swedish National Council on Medical Ethics, the ethics council of the National Board of Health and Welfare, the Advisory Council of the National Board of Forensic Medicine and The Swedish Media Council.
I have together with Torbjörn Lodén edited the book Global ethics in a time of Crises (Bloomsbury 2025). This book brings together leading international scholars in philosophy, social sciences, and religious studies to reflect on how global problems can be understood and addressed through an ethical lens. As the scholarship in this volume reveals, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East; the tensions in East and Southeast Asia and growing global insecurity; the climate crisis and environmental destruction; and the risk for global pandemics and global inequalities all call for action based on globally shared ethical principles and values.
In my book Global Rectificatory Justice (Palgrave 2015), I examine the moral obligations to compensate countries that have suffered from historical injustices, such as colonialism. I argue that these obligations are grounded in a principle of historical justice, which holds that past wrongs create a moral duty to rectify them.
I have edited Ethics and Communication: Global Perspectives (2016), a collection of essays that explores how ethics can be communicated in an age of globalization. The book addresses the challenges of overcoming cultural differences and agreeing on common values and principles that transcend cultural borders.
Throughout my years as university teacher, I taught courses in ethics and applied ethics, including research ethics, medical ethics, and ICT ethics and served as Director for the international master’s programme in Applied ethics at Linköping University.
I have been involved in several EU-funded research projects; Ethical Dilemmas due to Prenatal and Genetic Diagnostics (EDIG), Personal Health Monitoring – Ethics (PHM-Ethics) and the SATORI-project (Stakeholders Acting Together. On the Ethical Impact Assessment of Research and Innovation), 2014-2017.
I was Programme Director of the International Master's Programme in Applied Ethics at Linköping University 2002-2017, and my assignments included being scientific secretary of the Linköping Regional Board of Vetting of Research on Human Beings, member of the Swedish National Committee for Research Misconduct and member of the board of the Swedish Council for Research in Humanities and Social Sciences., and the panel Starting grants for assessing research applications to European Research Council (ERC).
