The decision to extend Jan-Ingvar Jönsson's term of office as vice-chancellor was taken by the Government following a recommendation from the University Board of Linköping University.
“Jan-Ingvar Jönsson has carried out important transformative work during his six years as vice-chancellor. He has brought the university closer to Europe, created the conditions for LiU to become a leader in AI in both education and research, and overall established a clear roadmap for the future. I am pleased that Jan-Ingvar will have the opportunity to continue developing what is set out in our vision and strategic plan,” says Susanne Thedéen, Chair of the University Board.
When Jan-Ingvar Jönsson took up the position of vice-chancellor, he emphasised that LiU has a position to safeguard, but also to develop through excellent research, innovative education and an interdisciplinary approach. Since then, he has established a vision and a strategic plan extending to 2030.
“Yes, I believe we have come a long way in many respects. We have a record number of students, have established several new laboratory environments and centres of excellence, and have been highly successful in securing external funding. We host some of the largest research programmes ever undertaken in the country and have a strong position in AI, where our national hosting of supercomputing resources is, of course, a key component,” says Jan-Ingvar Jönsson.
“What we need now is to build on our ambition to become a leading university in Europe and to strengthen collaboration with the wider world in order to address major societal challenges. Continued renewal is what I see ahead of us in the coming years.”
