Robert Mare, a founding affiliate of the Institute for Analytical Sociology and distinguished professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, died of leukemia in his home in Marina Del Rey, California on February 1. He was 69.

Rob was a tremendous scholar, a dedicated, compassionate mentor, and a friend to many at the Institute. Rob made critical advances in the analysis of social stratification, assortative mating, and segregation. His contributions extend beyond his publication record to the numerous young scholars whom he trained, and who continue to push the boundaries of sociological and demographic research.
